What to Expect at a Class

About the classes

The meditation classes explain Buddhist meditation, ideas, and practice. They combine guided meditation with practical spiritual advice that you can apply immediately to relieve stress and solve problems in your life.

Everyone is welcome. The classes are suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend the classes, or to benefit from the techniques taught.

The classes are organized as short courses, usually 5 to 8 weeks long. It is best to attend complete courses, but you can attend occasionally if you prefer. The classes are easy to follow and do not need prior knowledge or experience.

About meditation

In his book, The New Meditation Handbook, Geshe Kelsang explains:

"Meditation is a mind that concentrates on a virtuous object, and which is the main cause of mental peace. The practice of meditation is a method for acquainting our mind with virtue. The more familiar our mind with virtue, the calmer and more peaceful it becomes. When our mind is peaceful, we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness."

Class format

The teacher will teach you how to meditate and will give practical guidance during the class. He or she will give a talk based on Buddha's teachings that will explain how to put meditation into practice in daily life to increase your own and others happiness. There will be a chance to ask questions, and after the class there will be light refreshments and the opportunity to talk to the teacher.

The above is a rough outline of a typical class structure. There may be slight variation from class to class.

These weekly classes are part of our General Programme, and are open to everyone. We also offer more advanced Kadampa Buddhist Study Programmes—the Foundation Programme and the Teacher Training Programme—for people who would like to progress to deeper and more extensive study and practice.

What do you need to do to attend?

Simply find a meditation class location that suits you. You do not need to book in advance.

Attire and Equipment

Comfortable and casual clothing is fine for the class. People usually sit on chairs to meditate. No other equipment is needed.
